Voeding & Beweging NU promotes recovery and health by integrating nutrition and physical activity in patient care. They connect healthcare, research, and education, translating scientific findings into practice through training and collaboration. Their target groups are healthcare professionals, researchers, and educators working in nutrition,
movement, or both.

About

Voeding & Beweging NU (VBNU) is a collaboration between the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Amsterdam UMC. The initiative was launched by the departments of Nutrition and Dietetics and of Rehabilitation Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, the research institute Amsterdam Movement Sciences, and the consortium of research groups People in Motion at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

This collaboration began in 2021, and will continue to seek partnerships with other organizations. At the bottom of their own website, you’ll find several statements of support.

VBNU focusses on the integration of nutrition and movement within healthcare, not limited to one specific condition, but aimed at improving recovery and overall health in a broad sense.

Their primary audiences are:

  • Healthcare professionals (e.g., dietitians, physiotherapists, and related disciplines);
  • Researchers working in the fields of nutrition and movement;
  • Educators involved in relevant health education programs.

They aim to transfer actionable knowledge, tools, and research results to these professionals—empowering them to integrate nutrition and movement into their daily practice.

Research

The mission of VBNU is to promote recovery and health by optimizing an integrated nutrition and physical activity treatment for patients during and after illness. There is a wealth of valuable research being conducted at Amsterdam UMC and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), but too often, the results remain within academic circles. As a result, opportunities for improving healthcare are lost. VBNU aims to bridge this gap—so that patients truly benefit from the knowledge that is developed.

  • They connect healthcare, research, and education in a structured and meaningful way.
  • They promote the integration of nutrition and physical activity as one combined treatment approach.
  • They translate research outcomes into practice through implementation and training.
  • They gather questions from the field and turn them into research topics.
  • They provide training and resources for healthcare professionals and educators.

Their belief: nutrition and movement are not separate interventions—they reinforce one another when combined.

On the VBNU website you will find:

  • An overview of current and recently completed projects in nutrition and physical activity;
  • Educational opportunities and training programs for professionals;
  • Practical tools and information to support integrated care;
  • Patient-related materials that healthcare professionals and researchers can use.
