Judith Visser went on a work visit to Dublin, Ireland from May 31 to July 4, 2025.

Ireland is a leader in smoking cessation care, and thanks to a travel grant from the Amsterdam Public Health Research Institute, I had the opportunity to see this firsthand. During my visit in Ireland, I learned that a small, dedicated team from HSE Tobacco Free Ireland, supported by government funding, provides well-coordinated, accessible, effective, and person-centered smoking cessation services across the country, with a focus on disadvantaged communities. The positive insights from my own research, such as the importance of providing smoking cessation support in familiar settings by a trusted individual, are clearly reflected in the Irish approach, and implementing such valuable elements in the Dutch context could be a meaningful step toward strengthening smoking cessation care in the Netherlands, especially for disadvantaged communities.
