As of December 2025, APH researcher Chris Hoeboer is the new program leader of Global Health, and will take over the role from Marianne van Elteren. Together with Constance Schultsz, he will lead the research program.
Chris Hoeboer is an assistant professor at the department of Psychiatry at Amsterdam UMC, specializing in psychotrauma. He has been part of the senior program council of APH Global Health since 2022. He is dedicated to improve psychotrauma care by developing culturally sensitive assessments of psychotrauma, increasing understanding of how and for whom PTSD treatments work, with attention to diversity factors such as culture and gender and improving effectiveness and accessibility of PTSD treatment through enhancing mechanisms of change, personalizing treatments and developing targeted early interventions.
His current research includes large epidemiological studies into the prevalence of PTSD and help seeking behavior in the Netherlands with attention to the impact of diversity and studies on the effect of early interventions for PTSD targeted to those at risk based on machine learning algorithms. Chris is also involved in studies investigating whether PTSD treatment can be personalized based on patient characteristics using machine learning models. Chris strives to make a contribution to clinical practice, for example by his current work on updating the European guidelines for psychosocial care following disasters and major incidents, and his work on providing mental health support to victims of intimate partner violence. Chris is also involved in several global projects including projects on mental health support in the context of armed conflict and projects related to investigating the impact of trauma and trauma-related disorders on people’s propensity to seek violent or peaceful solutions in conflict settings.
Chris previously served on the board of the Dutch Society for Traumatic Stress and is currently a member of the Medical Ethical Review Board (METC) of Amsterdam UMC. Within the Global Collaboration on Traumatic Stress, he leads multiple international projects, including work on the global manifestation of PTSD and the development of mental health support for survivors of intimate partner violence. He also serves as Guest Editor for a special issue on global diversity in psychotrauma for the European Journal of Psychotraumatology.
