Focus of research

My research focuses on the performance measurement, management and improvement of healthcare systems. My aim is to explore the characteristics of actionable healthcare performance indicators, answering—what makes performance indicators work—in order to strengthen their fitness for purpose and use within and across healthcare systems.

My research is international in scope, primarily spanning Central Asian and European countries and the Canadian context. I work closely with international organizations including the World Health Organization, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the European Commission. As a fellow of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network for Healthcare Performance Intelligence Professionals, I collaborate with researchers with a focus on healthcare performance intelligence across Europe and Canada.

Recent areas of research include a focus on exploring creating performance intelligence in primary health care systems across Central Asia, the Netherlands and Canada, including available data sources (e.g., electronic medical records, prescribing data), and the uses of this data for improving policy (macro), organizational (meso) and care (micro) processes. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, I am exploring the actionability of COVID-19 data using web-based dashboards as a modality for reporting pandemic-related information to the public.
