Focus of research
My name is Joost Gülpen and I am a PhD candidate and psychologist, at the department of psychiatry (location University of Amsterdam), embedded within the Amsterdam Public Health research institute, program Mental Health. I have a background in clinical practice and hope to help bridge the gap between academia and mental health care.
My current research is directed at optimizing treatment outcomes for patients partially remitted from common mental health disorders (in particular, major depressive disorder [MDD]). Approximately one thirds of patients treated with pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy or its combination achieve no more than partial remission from MDD. Furthermore, partial remission has been shown to be a serious debilitating and distressing clinical phase, associated with a broad range of adverse outcomes. I am currently running a multicenter RCT investigating the effectiveness of a multimodal treatment in reducing depressive symptomatology and preventing relapse in adult partially remitted depressed patients (HERSTEL-study). Additionally, I am performing traditional meta-analytic and individual patient data (IPD) meta-analytic research, to examine overall efficacy, potential modifiers of treatment effects and associations with prognostic markers in patients partially remitted from depression.
