Focus of research
Óscar Brito Fernandes is an Assistant Professor in the Health Systems and Services research group at the Department of Public and Occupational Health, Amsterdam UMC, University of Amsterdam, where he applies a multidisciplinary approach to improving health systems. With an educational background spanning mathematics, education, public health, and healthcare management, Óscar’s research focuses on the measurement, management, and improvement of health system performance at all levels—from policy to practice—and is largely informed by theories of value-based healthcare, learning health systems, complex adaptive systems, and deliberative democracy. He received his PhD in 2022 from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Amsterdam. Óscar’s work is driven by a vision of transforming health systems into people-centred, value-based models by harnessing performance intelligence to inform better health policy and decision-making.
