Specialization
Terence is a Chemist and a BS Biochemistry/MS Pharmacology graduate from the University of the Philippines, Manila (UPM). She worked as a researcher in the field of Human Genetics for more than 13 years (March 2009 to September 2022) in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), UPM.
Terence has sufficient experience in providing information to Clinical Geneticists regarding genetic tests available for individuals with or at risk of conditions with probable genetic basis, and genetic factors that may affect drug prescription. She is adept in molecular biology techniques particularly but not limited to primer design, DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE), hybridization assay, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA), fragment and Sanger sequencing analyses. She has an extensive experience in writing research proposals for publication or submission to regulatory/funding institutions such as the UPM Research Ethics and Technical Research Boards (UPMREB/TRB), Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Newborn Screening Reference Center (NSRC).
Terence has been involved as a co-investigator and/or researcher in projects that deal with the molecular basis of genetic diseases such as Mucopolysaccharidosis II, Classical Homocystinuria, Alpha/Beta Thalassemias, Retinoblastoma, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), Cystic Fibrosis, and Breast Cancer and CYP2D6 in Filipinos. She co-authored an international and local publication on Classical Homocystinuria and Thalassemia aside from her other co-authored published conference papers on Thalassemias and CAH, which were presented locally and in international conferences.
Terence also functioned as the Team Leader of the Molecular Genetics Unit, Institute of Human Genetics (IHG), NIH, UPM for more than 5 years (February 2017 to September 2022) wherein the confirmatory testing of Thalasemias and Hemoglobinopathies screened via the Expanded Newborn Screening Program of the Philippines is being done. She also served as one of the Biorisk Managers, ISO 9001:2008/2015 Auditors, and members of the ISO 15189:2012 Steering Committee of IHG.
Currently, Terence is a PhD student in the Department of Human Genetics, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Amsterdam University Medical Center, locatie Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
