Focus of research
  • Diagnosis and Management of Bile Duct Tumours: Specializing in clinical approaches and surgical techniques for treating bile duct tumours.
  • Liver Ischemia and Reperfusion: Investigating the physiological and pathological aspects of liver ischemia and reperfusion, especially in the context of liver protection during liver resection.
  • History and Art in Medical Education: Conducting historical research in surgery and art-based observational training in medical education.
  • Outreach Projects in Surgery: Contributing to outreach projects to improve surgical care in low- and middle-income countries.

Thomas M. van Gulik is Professor em. of Surgery at the Amsterdam University Medical Center in the Netherlands. He was trained in Amsterdam and after surgical fellowships at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and at Pittsburgh Medical Center, he specialized in surgery of the liver, biliary tract and the pancreas (HPB surgery). His main clinical interest focuses on diagnosis and management of bile duct tumors. He supervised the Surgical laboratory at the University of Amsterdam and directed research on liver ischemia and reperfusion in relation with liver protection and liver resection. He has supervised 60 PhD students.
