31 researchers who have recently received their PhDs can do their research at foreign research institutes thanks to a Rubicon grant from NWO. The Rubicon programme gives young, highly promising researchers the opportunity to gain international research experience.
One of these talented researchers is Philip Brouwer. He will visit the The Scripps Research Institute, Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology (VS) for 2 years.
He will study a Lassa vaccine to protect against this deadly virus from an unwanted house guest. Lassa fever is a rat-borne, often fatal, disease caused by the Lassa virus. There is no vaccine against Lassa fever yet. Brouwer will make a stable Lassa protein that can act as a candidate vaccine and generate insights into the interaction between our immune system and the virus.
