Dr. Karuna van der Meij is a postdoctoral researcher at Human Genetics department of Amsterdam UMC. Her research focuses on prenatal screening and improving counseling practices to better support pregnant couples and healthcare providers.

It is crucial that decisions about prenatal screening are well-informed and in line with couples’ values. My research aims to ensure equitable access to high-quality prenatal counseling for all couples.

This video
on the implementation of the non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) in the Netherlands, in which I am featured, summarizes the key findings of our TRIDENT-2 study inan easily accessible format for the general public and healthcare professionals. Other ways are sharing knowledge through social media, webinars for healthcare professionals, teaching of bachelor students and informing policy through reports."

How does the research of Dr. Karuna van der Meij contribute to the health of current and future generations?
"Screening for fetal conditions during pregnancy can be reassuring for prospective parents, but it can also cause considerable uncertainty and distress. It is crucial that decisions about prenatal screening are well-informed and in line with couples’ values. My research aims to ensure equitable access to high-quality prenatal counseling for all couples."
