Older adults are bearing the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic will have consequences on many aspects of the lives of elderly, even beyond the immediate risks of infection and consequent disease and hospitalization. Isolation measures may result in a considerable burden of loneliness and symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical, emotional and social functioning will be investigated in participants of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA; www.lasa-vu.nl) . Participant of the study live in several geographic areas throughout the country, including those that are known to have had high rates of infection and hospitalization. Because the non-specific group of ‘older adults’ is very heterogeneous, we will also investigate if some have experienced unanticipated positive effects of the situation.
