The international research team has received a major €1.24 million financial boost from the BeNeFIT program of ZonMW and the Belgian KCE. This project will conduct an international multicenter randomized clinical trial to determine which spasticity surgery - a baclofen pump or selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) - is most effective and efficient in improving the quality of life for children with severe Cerebral Palsy (CP).
The research will take place in the Netherlands and Belgium, in Amsterdam UMC it is led by principal investigators Prof. Dr. Annemieke Buizer and Dr. Mariam Slot, and at UZ Leuven it is supervised by Prof. Dr. Philippe de Vloo.
The grant allows researchers to rigorously evaluate and compare the outcomes of two surgical interventions, paving the way for improved care and better quality of life for children who suffer from severe spasticity caused by CP.
