The AMS Annual Meeting on March 23, 2023 was well visited and enjoyed by over 200 members. Keynote speaker Dr. Rob Wüst presented his work Skeletal muscle adaptations and post-exertional malaise in patients with long-COVID. Prof. Andrew Jones from the University of Exeter, UK held his keynote entitled: What does it take to run a sub-2 hour marathon?: The physiological poetry of Eliud Kipchoge. The plenary poster pitches were held for this first time and were well reviewed, as well as the workshops sessions.
For the first time, the Outstanding Paper Award consisted of three different categories: Basic science, Clinical science and Sports & Health. The award in the category Basic science was presented to Richie Goulding for the publication Altered muscle oxidative phenotype impairs exercise tolerance but does not improve after exercise training in multiple sclerosis, published in Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2022; 13: 2537-2550. The award in the category of Clinical science was presented to Robin Kwakman for the publication Steps to Recovery: Body weight-supported treadmill training for critically ill patients: a Randomized Controlled Trial, published in Journal of Critical Care, 2022; 69: 1540003. The award in the category Sports & health was presented to Joep Suskens for the publication Effect of two eccentric hamstring exercises on muscle architectural characteristics assessed with diffusion tensor MRI, published in Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, 2022; 00: 1-14.
The Societal Outreach Award was handed to Petra van Schie for the Frame Running project: Implementation of a new para-athletic sports for persons with mobility limitations in the Netherlands. In the category Basic science, the Best poster award went to Andi Shi for the research Skeletal muscle phenotype-specific effects of ACVR1B and TGFBR1 receptor signaling on muscle transcriptome, force generation and metabolism. In the category Clinical science, the Best poster award went to Moritz Eggelbusch for the research Estimating vastus lateralis muscle volume from a single anatomical cross section using ultrasound. In the category Sports & health, the Best poster award went to Michel de Haan for the research Sprint and endurance performance in young elite soccer players at different playing positions. Finally, the Audience award went to Rein Miedema for the research ADJUST: a stiffness adjustable ankle-foot-orthosis for efficient human-in-the-loop orthosis select.
