General
How can we ensure that our research is inclusive and reflects the diversity of patients and research participants? Recently, we announced the launch of the SIG Inclusive & Diverse Health Research within APH to address this question.
The Inclusive & Diverse Health Research SIG aims to connect researchers working on inclusive research and to share knowledge and experiences around inclusivity, diversity, and vulnerable populations in research. The SIG is led by Inge van Strien, Karuna van der Meij, and Bryn Hummel and we are happy to invite all APH researchers to the official kick-off meeting of our SIG!
Kick-off meeting
To celebrate the start of this SIG, we are organising a kick-off meeting on Thursday 12 November 2026, 11:00–13:00, at the VU, MF-building, rooms C076/C082.
During the meeting you can expect:
- Short presentations showcasing how diversity and inclusivity are addressed across the different pillars of Amsterdam UMC:
- Healthcare – Dachel Seeratan, MD-PhD candidate, Gynaecologic Oncology
- Research – Nora Hamdiui, Assistant Professor, Public and Occupational Health
- Education – Olga Damman, Associate Professor, Public and Occupational Health
- Valorisation – Julio Klaverweide, Advisor Strategy & Innovation, Amsterdam UMC
- Pitches by (early-career) researchers on their inclusive research projects and lessons learned
- The opportunity to connect with fellow researchers during a free lunch
- An inventory of your expectations and possibilities to contribute to this SIG
Pitch your work and win a masterclass!
Have you just started on an inclusive research project, or have you been working on this topic for a few years already? Regardless of your experience, your insights are always worth sharing. During this meeting, we will have time for a few (early-career) researchers to pitch and share their projects. In addition to hearing about your project and the results, we are eager to hear about your lessons learned. How will you handle the challenges with inclusive research in future projects, and what tips do you have for other early-career researchers?
During a brief pitch (2-3 minutes, optionally with 2-3 slides max), we will give you a stage to showcase your work, share your experiences, and give tips to other researchers based on your lessons learned. And there is a great prize to win: a free place at the Ophelia Masterclass! This masterclass ‘from co-design to improving equitable access to health and social care services’ takes place on December 3 & 4 at Nivel, for more information see here.
Do you want to pitch your research and get a chance to win this prize? Please send a brief (150-200 words) summary of your project, results (if available), and lessons learned to APH-SIGinclusiveresearch@amsterdamumc.nl by Tuesday 3 November 2026 at the latest. Please note: only researchers affiliated with one of the APH programs are eligible to pitch.
We hope to welcome many of you!
