On June 18, the sixth edition of APH Junified took place: a yearly event organized for early and midcareer researchers within the Amsterdam Public Health (APH) research institute. This year’s edition, themed ‘Boost your AI skills – Thriving as a researcher in the age of AI’, focused on developing AI skills. The afternoon program, held at Hotel CASA in Amsterdam from 13:00 to 18:00, offered a mix of keynote, energizer, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities.

Plenary session

APH vice director Jeroen Lakerveld guided participants through the inspiring program. We kicked off the day with an introduction to the Amsterdam Center for AI & Health (AmsCAIH), the AI-Health center within APH, by Prof. Martijn Schut. Schut followed this with his powerful keynote: “Hidden in plain text: Using AI on general practice notes to detect lung cancer earlier.” We closed the plenary session with an energizer session led by Jozien Vedder, Fit for the Job ambassador.

Interactive workshops

Following the plenary session, the day included three workshops:

  • Workshop A, AI-assisted literature research in practice, was led by Bram Kreuger. This session focused on AI-assisted literature research in practice, using tools such as Elicit, Consensus, Semantic Scholar and Perplexity.
  • Workshop B, Beyond the hype: Responsible use of AI in occupational and public health, was led by dr. Astrid de Wind & Max Tijhuis. This session focused on the responsible use of AI in occupational and public health.
  • Workshop C, Communication visualized, was led by Inge Dekker. This session focused on communication visualization and drawing as a tool for communication.

Closing

The event concluded with a quiz, prizes, and networking drinks, offering opportunities to connect and exchange experiences. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this event a success: from speakers and workshop providers to all participants. Your engagement helped strengthen and further develop AI skills within APH.
