Focus of research

The group of Wouter de Jonge studies mechanisms of functional and inflammatory gastro-intestinal disease.

I am a translational scientist and Professor of Experimental Gastroenterology since 2013, with joint appointments at Amsterdam UMC (the Netherlands) and the University Clinic Bonn (UKB, Germany, 2018). My research focuses on intestinal immunity and the microbiome, with the goal of advancing treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and improving post-operative care following surgery. I did my PhD at medical faculty of Amsterdam UMC and scientific training at Utrecht University, at the Hubrecht Laboratory (Prof. Durston), Columbia University (New York), Amsterdam UMC, and the University of Oxford (Prof. Gordon). I serve on the Valorisation Board of Amsterdam UMC and have been a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF) since 2020. I am a member of the scientific board of MDL Fonds since 2022. In 2022, I co-founded AIBiomics BV, an analytical microbiome company, in 2021, Microbiota Center Amsterdam (microbiotacenter.nl), in 2016, and the Amsterdam Pediatric Abdominal Center laboratory in 2025.

I am coordinating the following international programs in Gastroenterology as PI including:

• EpiMAC - epigenetic programming of mucosal immune cells (EU Horizon EID network 2015)

• GROWTH - early-life microbiota and long-term health (EU Horizon EID 2020)

• METHYLOMIC - personalized treatment of Crohn's disease (Horizon Europe TOOL11 2023)

• METARYL - Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life program, EU HDHL 2024)

• BIOMARKERS – Health Holland funded program on personalized medicine for IBD, 2024)

• MICROPIAL – Health Holland TKI funded program on microbial products for gut health, (2024)

• MILKFAT -Health Holland Life Science and Health, 2024

• BINC-Biostim Institute Nutrition and Care, 2023

And partner to the programs:

• INTERCEPT - prevention of IBD (Innovative Health Initiative 2025).

• SMARTHEAL (EIC Transition 2025) aimed at improving post-operative care after bowel surgery

• AMFIBIO (Helmsley Foundation 2022) A program to understand fistulae formation in Crohns disease
