Committee for Talent and Appointments
About the Committee for Talent and Appointments (CTA)
The Committee for Talent and Appointments (CTA) is an independent advice committee for the deans of the Faculties of Medicine of the VU and the Faculties of Medicine of the UvA of Amsterdam UMC. The committee provides advice to the Deans on the appointment of Associate Professors (UHD) and Professors and on talent and career development to the Board of Directors (BoD).
Transparent academic career development
The goal of the CTA is to contribute to transparency and fairness of internal career policies. To this end, the CTA Internal Regulations describe the CTA’s core responsibilities, composition, tasks and how the evaluation process is handled (to be published after confirmation by the BoD).
Implementation of Recognition & Rewards
The CTA has been assigned to implement Recognition & Rewards (R&R) within Amsterdam UMC. Amsterdam UMC is involved in the national Program Recognition & Rewards. Since 2019, Dutch knowledge institutions (universities, university medical centra's, KNAW) and science funding organizations (NWO, ZonMw) have been working towards a more balanced and inclusive way of recognizing and rewarding academic work.
We want to create more space for diverse talent, for the values of Open Science, for leadership and for specific career paths to follow within the core domains of all university medical centers: research, education, valorization & societal impact, and clinical work/patient care. Amsterdam UMC is a partner in this program and is actively participating in it.
Please find a special page dedicated to the Culture Barometer, with inspiring testimonials of academics with different career profiles, such as Geert Schenk, Bernadette de Bakker and Joeri Tijdink.
Career profiles
The CTA has developed four Career Profiles based on R&R and in line with the policies of the UvA and VU. Candidates can choose one main and (at least one) additional domain from the following career paths:
- Research
- Education
- Valorisation & Societal Impact
- Clinical Work.
In the Qualification Portfolio (QP), the candidates include their CV and narratives on their career choices and achievements. In any case, research and/or educational roles are essential as academic core in the CV of the candidate. In addition, the candidate should perform leadership & management roles. Also, the University Teaching Qualification is required (BKO: for more information on how to obtain the BKO, please consult the BKO website of Amsterdam UMC) and there are requirements with regard to PhD supervision. In line with R&R, we also value Open Science and teamwork.
How to become Associate Professor or Professor?
Candidates who want to become Associate Professor or Professor are nominated by their department head to the Dean. The Deans discuss the formation available with the Divisions and prioritize the nominated candidates. Candidates who are put forward for promotion are requested to fill out the Qualification Portfolio of Amsterdam UMC (QP) that has been developed by the CTA, in which they describe their main profile and additional domain(s).
Career track
Academics can also enter a Career Track from Associate Professor to Full Professor for which they can be nominated by their department head to the Dean.
Please note that appointments transcend mere procedural formalities such as meeting the requirements on a checklist. In each case, the institutional needs and individual's talents should be aligned to foster academic excellence and institutional advancement.
Qualification Portfolio
To this end, the Qualification Portfolio should clearly describe how the candidate fits within the strategic objectives of their department and within the broader academic environment of Amsterdam UMC.
The Qualification Portfolio is accompanied by recommendation letters from the department head, division leader, director of the research institute and/or the vice-dean of Education.
The full dossier (QP, letters and BKO certificate) is evaluated by the CTA. Based on these documents, the CTA provides independent advice on the proposed career step to UHD or Professor to the Dean. The Dean will ultimately decide, balancing all perspectives, on continuing the appointment process for Associate Professor or Full Professor.
