AR&D affiliate Professor Martina Cornel has been appointed a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau and made an honorary member of the Health Council of the Netherlands, recognising her longstanding contribution to community genetics, public health and society.
The honours were announced on 4 September 2026 during a symposium at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam marking Martina’s retirement. The programme reflected on her career and her contribution to community genetics, public health genomics and the public debate on genetics.
As professor of Community Genetics & Public Health Genomics at Amsterdam UMC, Martina has been a leading voice in bringing genetic knowledge into healthcare and society. Throughout her career, she has combined research with policy, education and public engagement, contributing to developments in both the Netherlands and internationally.
Among her many roles, Martina has served as a member of the Health Council of the Netherlands, chair of the National Programme Committee for Neonatal Heel Prick Screening at RIVM, and president of the European Society of Human Genetics. She has also played an important role in encouraging dialogue about the opportunities and societal and ethical questions surrounding genetics.
The royal distinction recognises her exceptional contribution to science, public health and society. Her honorary membership of the Health Council is a fitting recognition of her longstanding involvement and contribution to the Council.
