Meet Rosemijne Pigmans
Rosemijne Pigmans is a Technical Physician and postdoctoral researcher at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Emma Children’s Hospital. Her research focuses on personalizing pediatric noninvasive ventilation (NIV) masks using 3D scanning and 3D printing.
I hope to advance personalized clinical care for patients who do not fit within current workflows or available devices.
What motivates Rosemijne Pigmans to do this research?
“During my PhD, I saw many patients struggling with poorly fitting ventilation masks. Nurses try everything to provide optimal NIV care, but the limited variety of masks makes this difficult. The search for the best-fitting mask can result in excessive air leaks, pressure injuries and patient discomfort.
Parents also see these complications and often ask whether a better solution is possible. These experiences motivate me to develop better-fitting masks and improve not only NIV care, but, above all, patient comfort.”
What impact does Rosemijne Pigmans hope her research will have?
“Beyond improving NIV care at the PICU, I hope this research will contribute to the development of personalized masks for patients outside the PICU, including those receiving chronic ventilation and adult patients who also struggle with mask fit.
Ultimately, I hope it will advance personalized clinical care for patients who do not fit within current workflows or available devices. Research into rapid production techniques can help pave the way for personalized care in clinical practice, with potential applications extending beyond NIV.”
