Strengthening the intestinal barrier: the power of microbes

This project investigates how early changes in gut bacteria and their metabolites contribute to the development of two life-threatening intestinal diseases in prematurely born babies. The goal is to develop safe, preventive treatments that strengthen the intestinal barrier. In addition, de Meij aims to identify non-invasive, microbiome-based biomarkers for the early detection of these conditions in this vulnerable group.

NWO Talent Programme
The NWO Talent Programme gives researchers the freedom to pursue their own research based on creativity and passion. Vidi winners receive up to EUR 850,000. The programme encourages innovation and curiosity. Curiosity-driven research contributes to and prepares us for tomorrow's society. That is why NWO focuses on a diversity in terms of researchers, domains, and backgrounds. Together with the Veni and Vici grants, Vidi is part of the Talent Programme. Read more on the NWO website.
