AI&I is pleased to present the oppurtunity to apply for AI&I Cross-institute Synergy Grants
Goal
The grants have the aim to foster new collaborations between research institutes, supporting early-stage research ideas that can result in longer-term partnerships and/ or generate preliminary data for lager grant applications.
The grant requires the involvement of researchers from maximally two different research institutes, including Amsterdam institute for Immunology & Infectious diseases (AI&I) and one of the participating research institutes:
- Amsterdam Gastroenterology Endocrinology Metabolism (AGEM)
- Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences (ACS)
- Amsterdam Public Health (APH)
- Amsterdam Movement Sciences (AMS)
This may result in a new
- Collaborative network/ longer-term partnerships
- External grant proposal
What can be applied for
A fixed budget of 50.000 euro per grant is available for personal and/ or consumables
Proposal / Eligibility criteria
- A proposal has two main applicants but may involve additional collaborators.
- One main applicant should be primarily affilliated in PURE with AI&I and the other with the participating research institute.
- Main applicants have a PhD degree.
- Only one application can be submitted as main applicant (main applicants can be collaborator on other projects)
- The project must start early Q1 2027 and should be completed before December 1st 2027.
- The proposed research must be relevant to and fall within the scope of at least one program of the participating research institutes.
- No shared publications between main applicants as (shared) first/ last corresponding authors on topics related to the proposal in the last 5 years.
Specific egligibility criteria for AMS researchers:
- AMS applicants should be present at the meet & greet pitch on June 15th.
- The project should be related to the immune system.
Important dates
Joint research Meet & Greet for prospective applicants:
- June 15, 2026, 15.30 - 22.00 hrs, Hotel Casa, Amsterdam.
- Deadline project proposals: September 21, 2026 at 23.59 hrs.
- Outcome: November 2026
Evaluation criteria
The research proposals will be evaluated by reviewers from both participating institutes and will be based on the following criteria:
- Scientific quality (45%)
- Added value of the collaboration: synergy of the combined expertise for researchers and research institutes (35%)
- Likelihood to contribute to long-standing output (collaboration, future collaborantion grants, scientific output, network) (20%)
At equal scores, we will prioritize new collaborations and collaborations between early career scientists (within 10 years after obtaining PhD)
A maximimum of one grant per participating institute will be granted.

Requirements after obtaining the AI&I Cross-institute Synergy Grant
- Funds must be spent by December 1st, 2027
- Submission of a scientific final report describing how this grant stimulated a new collaboration and the archieved results by Q1 2028 and/ or within two monts of project's completion. This should include a final expense report.
- Must inform us if and for what reasons you deviate from the proposed project. Al&l and [fill in name of participating institute] have the right to withdraw the grant money if the deviation does not fit with the goals of the Cross-Institute Synergy grant.
- The Al&l and [fill in name of participating institute] affiliation has to be on all publications that arise from this project
- Refer to the Al&l and [fill in name of participating institute] Cross-Institute Synergy Grant in the acknowledgements of any publications resulting from the research performed funded by this grant by adding "This research was supported by a Cross-Insitute Synergy Grant of the Amsterdam institute for Immunology and Infectious diseases and [participating institute]” to the acknowledgements
- Refer to AI&I and the participating institute in communications about this grant (e.g. in the (social-) media, in presentations, or pitches)
- Must provide an English summary of the project and a picture of you (or your research team) for the Al&l and [fill in name of participating institute] website/newsletter/annual report upon request.
- Willingness to present the results at one of the institute's future meetings
