Amsterdam institute for Immunology and Infectious diseases

This grant call invites research partners based in Amsterdam to develop innovative, collaborative projects that strengthen the entire vaccine pathway: from disease surveillance and laboratory discovery to implementation, real-world use, and equitable access, including in low- and middle-income countries. 

We particularly welcome proposals that bring together biomedical, clinical, legal, social science, data science, and/or public health expertise from the outset and include themes such as vaccine regulation, acceptability, communication and uptake.  

By encouraging close collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, this call aims to build strong research networks capable of translating bench innovations into real‑world impact on vaccine‑preventable diseases.

The new collaboration may result in a new:

• Collaborative network
• Collaborative research line
• External grant proposal

What can be applied for

A fixed budget of EUR 30.000.

Deadline project proposals: October 31, 2026, at 23:59 (CEST).
Outcome: December 2026.

Proposal / Eligibility criteria

• The proposal must involve a new collaboration between the two main applicants, one affiliated with APH Global Health and one affiliated with AI&I. Additional collaborators, including from AIGHD, may be involved. Proposals involving all three parties are preferred.
• Main applicants have a PhD degree.
• Only one application can be submitted as main applicant.
• The project should be completed before December 1, 2027.
• No shared publications between main applicants on topics related to the proposal in the last 5 years. 
• Novelty of collaboration needs to be described. In case of prior publications, it needs to be explained how the prior collaboration is different from the current one.
• The scope of the project must fit within the theme of this call.

Justification of the expenses

An application must include a detailed budget, with clear start and end dates, taking the following requirements into account:

• The budget must be prepared in consultation with, and approved by, the financial controller(s)/project controller(s) of the department of the main applicants. 
• Each application must also include the name and contact details of the responsible financial controller(s)/project controller(s).

Evaluation criteria

The research proposals will be evaluated by reviewers from participating institutes and will be based on the following criteria:

• Relevance of the topic and fit with the call (20%).
• Scientific quality and feasibility of the work plan (30%).
• Added value of the collaboration: synergy of the combined expertise for researchers and research institutes (30%).
• Likelihood to contribute to long-standing output (collaboration, future collaboration grants, scientific output, network) (20%).

Requirements after obtaining the Vaccine Collaboration Grant

• Provide a scientific final report describing how this grant has stimulated a new collaboration and the results of this collaboration. 
• Provide an overview of expenses of the project before 1 December 2027. 
• Refer to the Vaccine Collaboration Grant in the acknowledgements of any publications resulting from the research performed funded by this grant by adding "This research was supported by the Vaccine Collaboration Grant of the Amsterdam institute for Immunology and Infectious diseases and the Global Health research program within the Amsterdam Public Health research institute” to the acknowledgements. 
• Refer to the Amsterdam Institute for Immunology and Infectious diseases and the Global Health research program within the Amsterdam Public Health research institute when communicating about this grant, e.g. in the (social-) media, or when presenting the data originating from this grant as posters/ oral presentations/ pitches.
