HIV is the second deadliest infection in the world after tuberculosis. And currently there is no vaccine against it. However, right at this moment our very own AII researchers Prof. Sanders and Dr. de Bree are developing this vaccine!
A few remarkable facts:
- It is unique that these studies for an HIV vaccine are being done in the Netherlands.
- It is for the first time that a vaccine is being developed in one hospital, Amsterdam UMC, from the design phase to the safety and efficacy studies in healthy volunteers.
- Some of the innovations by Prof. Sanders are already used for the COVID-vaccines.

This is a prime example of how the valorisation of research results can lead to an application that has an enormous societal impact. The positive impact on treating HIV through an effective vaccine can be groundbreaking!
