Each year, AMS awards Talent Grants to Research Master students in Human Movement Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
These grants, with a maximum of €3,000 each, support students in developing a research project that may introduce a new technique, initiate a collaboration, strengthen AMS expertise, or contribute to the student’s own scientific development.
The selected awardees for 2025
We congratulate!
Grant Recipient: Siem Noorman
Project focus: Developing an evidence-based approach for quantifying skill load in sports.
Siem’s project addresses the current lack of validated methods to quantify skill load in sport practice. Siem’s combined experience as both player and researcher places him in a strong position to execute this work. The project will enhance AMS’s visibility in evidence-based skill training. Siem is supervised by dr. David Mann.
Grant Recipient: Miguel Santamaria
Project focus: Advancing our understanding of sensorimotor integration in locomotion.
Miguel’s well-written proposal will strengthen AMS expertise in EMG–EEG coherence analysis and initiate a new collaboration. His project has clear societal relevance, improving understanding of cortical contributions to body weight support walking, a technique widely used in rehabilitation. With a background as a physical therapist, Miguel is well-suited for this work. Miguel’s intention to apply his skills in Colombia further enhances the societal impact of the project. Miguel is supervised by professors Nadia Dominici and Andreas Daffertshofer.
Grant Recipient: Thomas Weijers
Project focus: Enhancing the efficiency of functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling.
Thomas aims to optimize stimulation parameters to improve FES cycling efficiency, with clear potential impact for individuals with spinal cord injury. His proposal is exceptionally well-written and accessible, clearly outlining its clinical relevance. The hardware and methods Thomas will establish will support future AMS research. Thomas is supervised by dr. M.A. Afschrift and dr. D.A. Kistemaker.
