Julian Hollander, a PhD candidate at the department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, was given a grant in the AMS MSH program financed ‘International collaboration call’ in 2022. Julian had made plans for a research fellowship in Boston, MA, USA at the Foot & Ankle Research and Innovation Laboratory (FARIL) of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
Julian went to Boston from April – September 2023 and conducted research on osteochondral lesions of the talus, syndesmosis fixation and the use of artificial intelligence in diagnosing foot- and ankle disorders on radiographs and weight-bearing CT. He hopes to publish these results as soon as possible. When published, the articles can be found on Julian's profile page.
Besides doing research, Julian also wanted to get a good taste of American culture. Boston, specifically, is famous for the multiple top universities, but the city also has several sports teams that are competing in all the big American sports. Therefore, he visited several sports games such as basketball and (American) football. He also went linedancing when colleagues from Amsterdam visited Boston for the ISAKOS Congress.
Julian recently returned to Amsterdam to continue his PhD research on osteochondral lesions of the talus, under the supervision of professor dr. Gino Kerkhoffs and dr. Sjoerd Stufkens. According to Julian, he is extremely grateful for the support he received by several organizations, including the AMS MSH program.
