In the Netherlands, there are about 300,000 visually impaired persons (VIP's), of which the majority is aged 50 years or older. Low vision services can positively influence the independence, participation and quality of life of VIP's. Despite the societal relevance of these services only an estimated 10-15% of visually impaired people receive this support annually. Reasons for this low uptake are not very clear.
The aim of this study at the department of ophthalmology is to identify factors influencing the referral pathways towards low vision services. Several studies will be performed to obtain data at individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public policy level using mixed-methods. These include in-depth interviews and focus groups, a ‘big data’ study based on health insurance information (Vektis) and a large survey among VIP's that have or have not been referred to low vision services. Insights will lead to increased person-centered care and equity among VIP's.
