Update: Study Medication in Epic
At the AMC location, all new unit-dose studies have been prescribed via Epic since July 2025 (unit-dose = oral study medication or ready-to-use syringes).
At the end of 2025, the pilot for studies involving medication prepared in the pharmacy was also completed. All pilots have now been successfully concluded.
As a result, all new studies registered at the AMC location from January 2026 onwards will be initiated via Epic. At the VUmc location, all study medication is prescribed in Epic.
Are you planning to start a study involving study medication at the AMC location from 2026 onwards? We will ensure the medication records are available in Epic. Drug accountability will also be managed within Epic.
If you are not familiar with prescribing study medication in Epic, please contact the clinical trial pharmacy department (opstart.kgo@amsterdamumc.nl). We will provide the necessary instructions and support as needed.
Update: Drug–drug interaction checks for study medication at first dispense
Medication safety procedures for study medication differ between the two hospital locations. To harmonize procedures, the Clinical Trial Pharmacy will perform a drug–drug interaction check before the first dispense for all new studies submitted from 2026 onwards at the AMC location. This is already standard practice at the VUmc location.
The interaction check applies to unit-dose study medication (e.g. prefilled syringes, tablets, capsules) that participants use at home. With the first dispense of the study medication, the Clinical Trial Pharmacy will also provide a letter for the community pharmacy informing them of study medication use.
Required from the study team (current procedure at VUmc location)
- Before the first dispense, provide an up-to-date medication overview, either via email or in Epic.
- Give the pharmacy letter to the participant and instruct them to hand it over to their community pharmacy.

Update: Studiemedicatie in Epic
Op locatie AMC worden sinds juli 2025 alle nieuwe unit-dose studies via Epic voorgeschreven (unit-dose = orale studiemedicatie of kant-en-klare spuiten). Eind 2025 is ook de pilot afgerond voor studies waarbij de ziekenhuisapotheek geneesmiddelen bereidt. Alle pilots zijn hiermee succesvol afgesloten.
Daarom worden alle nieuwe studies die vanaf januari 2026 op locatie AMC worden aangemeld, via Epic opgestart. Op locatie VUmc wordt alle studiemedicatie voorgeschreven in Epic.

Ook de drug-accountability wordt in Epic uitgevoerd. Ben je niet bekend met het voorschrijven van medicatie in Epic? Update: Medicatiebewaking studiemedicatie bij eerste uitgifte
De geneesmiddelinteractie controle van studiemedicatie verschilt momenteel tussen de twee locaties. Om de werkwijze te harmoniseren, zal de afdeling Klinisch Geneesmiddelenonderzoek (KGO) bij alle nieuwe studies die vanaf 2026 op locatie AMC worden aangemeld, ook medicatiebewaking uitvoeren bij de eerste uitgifte. Dit is al standaardprocedure op de locatie VUmc.
Deze medicatiebewaking bij de eerste uitgifte geldt voor unit-dose studiemedicatie (bijv. voorgevulde spuiten, tabletten, capsules) die deelnemers ook thuis gebruiken. Bij de eerste uitgifte levert KGO een brief mee voor de openbare apotheek, waarin wordt geïnformeerd over de studiemedicatie en eventuele interacties.
Nodig van het onderzoeksteam (huidige procedure VUmc)
- Voor de eerste uitgifte een actueel medicatieoverzicht aanleveren, via e-mail of in Epic.
- De apotheekbrief aan de deelnemer meegeven om in te leveren bij de vaste openbare apotheek.
