The Dutch Heart Foundation has awarded six researchers of the Amsterdam UMC, among which Louis Handoko, the ‘Dekker grant’. These grants are personal grants for talented researchers.
With these grants (in total more than 2 million Euros) they seek for new solutions for, amongst others, miocardinal infarctions, cardiac failure, and cardiac arrhythmia.
APH researcher Louis Handoko (medical specialist at Amsterdam UMC), was one of the researchers who received the grant. He aims to improve the function of mitochondria with existing medications. These medications will increase the energy impuls to the cardiac muscle cells, which hopefully leads to a less clenched heart in case of heart failure resulting from a stiff heart muscle.
