As of December 2025, APH researcher Michiel Winter has been appointed program leader of Digital Health. He succeeds Ronald Cornet and will co-lead the program together with Marlies Schijven.
Michiel Winter is a cardiologist at Amsterdam UMC and former chair of the board of Cardiology Centers Netherlands (CCN), a nationwide network of outpatient cardiology clinics. He is also principal investigator at the Amsterdam UMC Heart Center, where he leads several large-scale research consortia focused on digital health and clinical AI. His work centers on the real-world implementation of remote monitoring, wearables, and AI-driven diagnostics in cardiovascular care.
At Amsterdam UMC, Michiel serves as clinical lead of HartWacht, one of the Netherlands’ most widely adopted eHealth platforms for cardiology, currently serving >5000 patients nationwide. He has also been instrumental in developing a Hospital@Home model for heart patients, integrating data from telemonitoring devices, wearable sensors, and AI tools into Epic EHR workflows. His ongoing research includes the use of smartwatches to detect cardiac arrhythmias, AI in imaging diagnostics, and digital interventions for remote cardiovascular risk management.
Driven by a strong belief in the urgency of digital transformation, Michiel is committed to generating clinically meaningful evidence that accelerates the translation from innovation to implementation. He advocates for a collaborative approach that brings together healthcare providers, research institutions, policy makers, and private-sector partners, and is actively involved in European regulatory discussions.
Michiel’s vision for the APH Digital Health program is to move beyond technological novelty and focus instead on inclusive, scalable, and ethically grounded innovation and valorisation. He aims to foster the transdisciplinary research community within APH, bringing together data scientists, clinicians, behavioural scientists, ethicists, and patient advocates, to ensure digital tools improve care delivery in an equal and trustworthy manner.
As program leader, Michiel seeks to strengthen the bridge between academic research, clinical practice, and societal relevance. He is committed to positioning APH Digital Health as a leading European hub for impactful and responsible digital health research.
