“Pathology is an important cornerstone for cancer diagnosis and treatment. It also provides insight in cancer development resulting in diagnostic tools for cancer prevention, such as the prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced cancers. Breakthroughs are expected from early cancer detection by innovative molecular tests applicable to non- or minimally invasive sample types.
Assay development is an experimental challenge requiring an in depth understanding of cancer biology, technical optimization and clinical validation. Such can only be achieved by a multidisciplinary team of laboratory researchers, clinicians and data scientists that have faith in each other and enjoy working together.
A balanced collaboration within and outside academia, a balanced work attitude and a balanced test guiding further workup or treatment will direct the future of early cancer detection aiming to reduce cancer burden.“
