Sunday, October 20, was the TCS Amsterdam Marathon with a regional cancer research structure as its charity. In the Olympic Stadium, Geert Kazemier, oncological surgeon at Amsterdam UMC - Cancer Center Amsterdam accepted a check for a whopping 1.3 million euros. This record amount was made possible by the efforts of 1900 'Run Against Cancer' participants, donors and partners. A special contribution came from Action, which raised an impressive 250,000 euros with 432 runners and their partners.
Geert Kazemier emphasizes the importance of the proceeds, “This is an incredible achievement by everyone involved. With this support, we can make a difference in cancer research, and that is invaluable for patients in our region.”
RUN for the region
The amount raised from the 2024 TCS Amsterdam Marathon will be used for the “REN voor de regio" research project. In this project, regional hospitals in North Holland and Flevoland are joining forces with Amsterdam UMC - Cancer Center Amsterdam and the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek to establish a regional research infrastructure. The goal is to seamlessly connect care and research in the region so that cancer patients everywhere have equal access to innovative treatments and pioneering cancer research is accelerated.
