Seeing the unseen: novel imaging to capture placental insufficiency as it unfoldsClinicians currently measure everything around the placenta, such as fetal growth and blood flow patterns, but not the placenta itself. In her PhD thesis, Fatimah Al Darwish combined MRI, contrast-enhanced ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging in a rat model to directly visualize placental perfusion and oxygenation as insufficiency unfolds, uncovering a critical window for early detection and therapy.
