Co-funding requirements in research grants

Co-funding requirements are increasingly common in research grant opportunities applied for by Amsterdam UMC researchers. They are often public-private partnerships or part of infrastructure grants containing investments. Depending on the funding agency and grant this can be a mandatory in-cash or in-kind contribution from the institution, or private partners in the consortium (industry, patient organizations, government bodies, etc.).

The budget, including commitment and spending of co-funding, will need to be checked by the respective financial advisor. In addition, any legal or intellectual property issues arising from the arrangements need to be checked by LRS and/or IXA.

Internal co-funding: institutional co-funding from Amsterdam UMC. This is required in grants like NWO Research Infrastructure, or MSCA COFUND. Researchers are expected to secure co-funding which may involve approaching their department and, if needed, research institutes. Decisions on institutional co-funding are made by the Amsterdam UMC Board of Directors and this needs to be clarified and agreed upon before submission of the proposal. This often has to be included in the form of a signed letter of commitment often following a mandatory template provided by the funding agency. In case of a large number of co-funding requests, the institutional commitment can be subject to internal advise on selection of individual proposals.

External co-funding: an in-cash or in-kind contribution from (private) partners in the consortium (industry, patient organizations, government bodies, etc.). This is common in grants in for example NWO-KIC or IHI programmes and often requires signed documentation by legal representative of the co-funding organisations to be included in the submission. It is important to inform co-funding partners of their exact role, contributions and deadlines of mandatory administrative forms, letters and appropriate signatories.
